Homeward Bound Newsletter January 2024

It is hard to believe that 2024 is already here! It feels like just yesterday we were excited for 2023 and creating goals and resolutions for the year ahead, and now we are already doing it all over again.

2024 Happy New Year with Fireworks

The New Year brings a lot of excitement as many people look to try new things, set new priorities and goals or establish a New Year’s Resolution!

Our team is looking forward to continuing to grow and challenge ourselves in the New Year, but more importantly, we are thrilled to continue serving our clients big and are always looking for new ways to do so!

We continue to work towards our goal of donating $100,000 to Make-A-Wish so that we can help make the dreams of more critically ill children in Alberta come true in 2024.

Children, Make-A-Wish, Donations, Edmonton Charity

Make-A-Wish® creates life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. They are on a quest to bring every eligible child's wish to life because a wish is an integral part of a child's treatment journey.

Research shows children who have wishes granted can build the physical and emotional strength they need to fight a critical illness. As an independently operating affiliate of Make-A-Wish International, Make-A-Wish Canada is part of the network of the world’s leading children’s wish-granting organization.

Statistics on how wishes help critically ill children

Each wish granted by Make-A-Wish costs, on average, $10,000 and so they heavily rely on donations and volunteers to make dreams come true.

Every time you choose to work with The Dwight Streu Team or refer us, you are helping local kids as we donate a portion of our sales to this organization.

Make-A-Wish Canada grants more than 1,000 wishes annually, but they can’t do this vital work without the support of their donors and volunteers.

Wishes vary in expense by virtue of their variety and complexity. For example, a travel wish generally involves transportation, accommodations for immediate family members, meals, and expenses. In addition, any necessary medical expenses such as wheelchairs, respirators, and even medical attendants are covered. Make-A-Wish wants to make each wish child’s experience as magical and smooth as possible, and they do so by relying heavily on donations.

This is why our team chooses to donate a portion of our sales so that we can help them continue this invaluable work!

You can help, too, by referring your friends and family to our team! Check below how you can do so!

We believe that the size of the hole we give through is directly proportional to the size of the hole we receive through and we thank you for following along with us on our journey to give back to the Edmonton community!

In addition to supporting Make-A-Wish Canada, our team also donates to other organizations in our city, such as The Edmonton Food Bank and The Edmonton Mustard Seed. To learn more about what these organizations are doing in our city and their impact on our community and to stay updated about our efforts to give back to our community, check out the blog posts on our website!

Elyanna is a radiant young girl with a big heart who likes to be surrounded by the love of her family.

Unfortunately, Elyanna not only had to struggle with kidney cancer, but she also faced the loss of her grandmother. To face these difficult trials and fill the void left by her grandmother, Elyanna wanted to have a new best friend: a tiny being with four paws and a muzzle. Her wish was to have a French bulldog that she could play with, take care of, and love. She also wanted to spoil her dog with many mauve accessories (her favorite color), so her wish included a leash, harness and toys.

When she knew that her dream would come true, Elyanna was so moved that she couldn’t hold back tears of joy before wearing a big smile. When she went to choose her new pet, she fell in love with a little female she named Ahsoka, in reference to the Star Wars character who becomes a Jedi.

Holding Ahsoka in her arms while bringing her to her new home, Elyanna was very happy.

“With Ahsoka, a real wave of love invaded the house. It was the greatest reward we could have after years of struggling with cancer. We feel very grateful”, says her mom, Marie-Danielle.

Unfortunately, there are many more kids, like Elyanna, who are suffering from critical illnesses, but their wishes have yet to come true. Because of COVID-19, many wishes were put on hold, and as a result, over 4,000 heartfelt wishes are still waiting to be granted.

Thank you for supporting our team in 2023 and for allowing us to make dreams like Elyanna’s come true. We are looking forward to seeing what 2024 has in store!
