Every year Make-A-Wish hosts the Rope For Hope. It is one of their most popular fundraising events and this year my daughter, Haley was lucky enough to have the opportunity to volunteer. Through the Edmonton event alone, they raised $105,000.00!
So what is Rope For Hope? It’s a “unique challenge that calls on participants to raise pledges in exchange for a once-in-a-lifetime experience to rappel down the edge of a high-profile building”. In this case, it was the Coast Plaza Hotel. Participants came at 8 am and descended down 23 stories!
It’s a great opportunity to donate to a worthy cause and to have an unforgettable experience! After watching the participants rappel down the building, Haley was very grateful she didn’t sign up and will definitely be sticking to volunteering on the ground for future years! Aubrey, 3 years old
"I wish to share a circus party with my friends”
Medical Condition: Cancer
Wish Granted: October 2018
Three-year-old Aubrey was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia at 17 months old. Due to an FLT3 mutation, the leukemia was chemotherapy-resistant. She received radiation treatments but needed a bone marrow donor in order to survive. Aubrey’s father, Allan, was a half-match, so they proceeded with the transplant.
It was a nurse practitioner at BC Children’s Hospital who told Aubrey’s mom, Megan, that her daughter would qualify for a wish.
During her treatments in the hospital, Aubrey made a number of friends on the oncology ward. She is outgoing, loves performance, loves costumes, and loves to share. From these loves, a wish to share a circus with her friends was born. Aubrey handed out invitations to her friends in hospital, and all those who were able to attend were welcome.
In October 2018, a special circus was staged in a warehouse in North Vancouver and Aubrey was outfitted in a custom-made fairy princess costume for her special day. Vancouver Circus School brought performers: an aerialist, a contortionist, a juggler and the cotton candy queen. An illusionist and face painters also attended, and the whole warehouse was transformed into a big top circus.
Aubrey loved every minute of her special day, and the event was a welcome break from hospital life for so many other children.
Months later, Aubrey still enjoys putting on her fairy princess costume at home. She has a road of recovery ahead of her including regular check-ups and hormone therapies, but Aubrey is a happy girl who attends pre-school and is regaining her stamina.
When a wish is granted, it does much more than bring joy to a child’s heart. For wish kids like Aubrey, who are faced with critical illnesses, a wish-come-true provides them with strength to battle through darkness and hope for healthier, happier days ahead.
Help transform lives, one wish at a time …..
This year my friend and I participated in the 5k Foam Fest! Make-A-Wish is the official charity partner for the run and I thought it would be a great opportunity to support them. We went in thinking it was an obstacle course with a little bit of foam but were VERY MISTAKEN! It was a mud run. We had to swim through muddy waters, crawl through mud and then try to make our way over the obstacles while being very slippery. It was SO much fun and I totally recommend signing up to run next year with your family or friends! But learn from my mistakes though, don’t bring your phone, it is worth the wait to check a bag with your keys! -Haley Streu
~ Dwight Streu
“The Dwight Streu Real Estate Team personify integrity, respect, trust, professionalism, and efficiency. When we expressed interest in purchasing a condo suitable for seniors, he immediately sensed our vision and began to send us lists of properties he thought might interest us. With each list were the words "if you would like to view any of these properties, just let me know.” Throughout the process, Dwight was prompt, thorough, and took the time to "listen" to us. Never once did we feel rushed or pressured. We did feel a wide range of emotions. Dwight always validated our feelings and totally supported us as we talked through them, making sure we were comfortable with each decision. Dwight had the knack of anticipating our questions and often sent a timely e-mail or text with the answers we were seeking even before we voiced them. He made many many trips to our home, and was always patient, even though we knew he had other pressing needs. We highly recommend this team of experts. All three of our grown children (and many friends) have used the services of the Dwight Streu Real Estate Team. We will always be grateful to this wise team who helped to turn our dream into reality. Thank you doesn't do them justice.” ~Stan & Sharon Lagore via RankMyAgent.com
